McLean Residence (Sweepstake winner):
Awarded the Sweepstakes award for best overall entry, the landscape at the McLean home in Villa Park was designed by Elaine Iverson and was a complete renovation. Homeowners Judy and Tom McLean had the vision to mirror their modified California ranch style home into the landscape look and feel and create a user-friendly outdoor space for entertaining their family. This project features significant stone and paver work throughout, which brought the once patchy landscape together into a seamless flow of plant material, pool and outdoor living spaces. The renovation project includes a solid roof pavilion covering a large outdoor living space. The roof pavilion is made out of Douglas fir with trimmed posts painted white for a formal feel. The pool was completely redone to include reshaping and expanding the spa as well as changing the plumbing and re-plastering for a more aesthetic finish. The tiling in the pool is a special white finish to compliment the finish of the plaster’s coloring. The versatile outdoor kitchen includes a large sink, stainless steel cabinets, a refrigerator and a built-in bar-b-que. The project also includes a unique in-wall water feature with water sliding down the face of quartzite rock and disappearing into a pebble stoned platform, returning via an underground vault and pump system. The water feature shows no water when turned off and is lit up at night. It serves as a backdrop to a dining area. This dining area has a colored concrete with sand finish foundation and a metal arbor with a climbing Banksia rose hanging from the arched entry. Large rectangular travertine pavers are laid down in the grass to welcome visitors to this dining area. There is enough room in the outdoor living space for the kitchen and a formal dining and lounging area with a built-in television. Multiple trees are found in the landscape, including magnolia little gem, Japanese blueberry, white crepe myrtle standards and citrus. There are also a lot of cutting roses planted around the property as well as a large myrtus compacta hedge used to seam together the different elements on the landscape.
